Seven Capture Worthy

Alexander Graham Bell once said when one door closes another opens. Such has happened over the course of this past week, and while in this moment I can’t draw more upon that, I can say the sentiment rings true. Last week my fiancé, CJ, and I had to make the decision not TO buy a house on the 110 mile island of Eleuthera. Then again, it wasn’t a difficult one as such because we admittedly had no choice under the circumstances. However, when I say our disappointment mirrored that of many hoteliers, developers and visionaries, all of whom are bound to Eleuthera by shattered dreams, it really is no heartfelt exaggeration. Real-estate in Eleuthera is currently on the upswing, with Harbour Island – the jewel in the crown – to the North and Spanish Wells, a reinvigorated market to the East – both of which are easily accessible by boat – it is ideally situated among a varied archipelago. Not to mention on-island hotels such as The Cove, and developments such as French Leave, have recently encouraged travelers to put their magnifying glass to use when finding the 110 mile long island on a map.

On a far more personal level Eleuthera is where Jabez Pyfrom, grandfather to my great-grandmother-Maud, and therefore my great-great-great-grandfather farmed pineapples at the start of the eighteenth century. CJ and I had chosen the island for no more the reason than in a fit of desire to reestablish my family’s connection to the island. But, until such a time presents itself yet again we will consider our recent disappointment the work of greater powers at play, and for now enter the door behind which promising opportunities await.

 – Eleuthera, the island called Freedom in which Everild Young writes –
“During the pineapple season, when barges were loaded and brought to Governor’s Harbour to fill the waiting schooners, it was found more expedient to have some sort of residence close to the field that were being stripped, and the whole family would migrate to their property near Hatchet Bay, where they must have camped in luxury, as Maud can remember her mother being angry with her father for insisting upon taking the best linen sheets with him.”

– Recently we reupholstered our dining room chairs in a pineapple pattern so as to pay homage to my lineage. Although I don’t see us often laying our tables with the best linens, which would be much to Jabez Pyfrom’s disappointment. –

Because seven seems to be a more popular number than five round here.
