The Residences at The Dunmore

“You should ease in and out of a space – it should feel continuous” Branca says of the open layout. Designed by the award-winning Miami firm de la Guardia Victoria Architects & Urbanists, the u-shaped layout encourages indoor-outdoor living with a living room opening to a stone terrace that could be affectionately referred to as the “outdoor living area.” Another element not deserving of being overlooked is the upstairs and downstairs layout. In addition to a master bathroom and guest room, the upstairs includes a Great Room, Kitchen, Family Room, Bar Room and Dining Pavilion, allowing the occupants of the house to make most of the ocean views during their waking hours of the day.

Outfitted by celebrated interior designer Alessandra Branca, you may immediately recognize the style of interiors for her trademark saturated hues. In keeping with her belief that elegance should not be sacrificed at the expense of comfort, the interiors check off the three C’s: coastal, chic and colourful. On a total of 4,650 square feet she has painted layers upon layers of textures. In her signature style Branca used bold dashes of colour in several hallways, “You can do much more with [the hallway space] because you’re not necessarily living in it all the time—but when viewed from another room, it becomes your art.” says Branca.

The relationship of colour to place is deserving of our applause. More so in focus is the blush pink marking the exterior walls which mirrors the soft pink hues dusting the nearby pink sand beach. “We painted the courtyard that blush hue because we wanted to warm up the color that came off the ocean,” says Branca.

Located in walking distance to the The Dunmore, a property revamped in 2010 by interior designer and island connoisseur Amanda Lindroth, the resort offers 13 guest rooms, a pool, a gym, tennis courts, and a restaurant and bar.

Situated steps from Harbour Island’s three-mile famous pink sand beach, in minutes the textures underfoot change from the cushioning of grass, to sun warmed wooden planks, to soft powdered sand, to a cool lapping sea.

An island celebrated for its iridescent beach, but more so deserving of being recognized for the quality of restaurants and variety of cuisine it boasts on only 3.5 by 1.5 miles. The pace on the island never moves faster than that of a golf cart, the preferred mode of transportation, which is no doubt what keeps A-listers like Elle Macpherson, Zac Posen, Diane Von Furstenberg and of course, Branca herself returning to Harbour Island again and again.
