Coastal Covet – Meco Design

Morgan Gavin McKinney, owner + founder of Meco Design, is setting a trend below the sea’s surface and it is one worth raving about. Just in time for the much anticipated opening of tomorrow’s Crawfish Season (August 1st), the furniture designer has taken the traditional sling and beautifully etched it so that even the likes of James Bond would want his dive-bag to hold more than just a few. McKinney, who mastered his trade at Savannah College of Art & Design, leans over his table laden with wood shavings and works on each sling for a mere 20 minutes. Burning tool in hand he guides it over the wood to create lines forming repetitious patterns, only to stop for a few seconds and swap his tool of choice for a drill – which he says “gives the illusion of worm eaten wood” – after such a statement who would think that the end result is a sling covered in beautiful Hawaiian detailing?

Seeing is believing.

To purchase a sling visit here or here. Purchase a new customized sling for $60.00 – or already have one on hand? Take it to him and he’ll customize it for $30.00. For you locals, Kelly’s House & Home are selling slings starting at $17.99

P.S. Happy crawfishin’ – please note crawfish season closes Saturday, March 31st, 2013.
